Our promise

We promise that all of the profits made by the UKFSN.ORG operation will be used to fund Free Software in the UK.

Accountability

The above is a very big promise. I believe that it requires some means of verifying that it is being kept and that it should be possible for anyone to verify this easily.

To acheieve this I have decided that each month UKFSN will make a public statement showing how much income was generated and how (ie dialup revenue, subscriptions, domain registrations, etc) and what the costs of providing the service were.

This will clearly show what the operation surplus has been. As we're not a registered charity we do have to pay taxes so a percentage will be set aside for that and a percentage will also be set aside to build up a contingency/new services fund (so that we can build up the necessary reserves to offer unmetered service!).

The remaining money will be used to fund our UKFSN Profits programme. You can view details of our UKFSN Profits programme here.

Previously UKFSN has donated £1,000 to the Association for Free Software grants programme however that didn't seem to be very successful so we now handle this directly.

This page will contain the statements as they are released - usually each quarter.

I believe that this is the standard to which anyone who is making a promise like the above should be held.

Note that the ADSL expense figures are missing as we're still in dispute with our previous wholesale supplier (who we no longer use) over a couple of charging issues. We'll soon have corrected invoices and credit notes covering the past year and a bit and I'll be able to complete the accounts then.

*Dialup Revenue is the percentage we receive of the income our telco gets from the 0845 call charges you pay when you access the Internet via UKFSN.

So far we have not earned any income from this as there is a minimum requirement of 100,000 minutes of dialup usage per month before anything is paid out. The first three months of service saw our dialup usage increase by 10,000 minutes each month. That leveled off a bit once it hit 50,000 minutes a month however it looks like we're on course to pass the 100,000 minutes mark in August - assuming lots of users don't go away on holiday. If we do make it we'll know the value of the callshare minutes some time in October.
